Merry Christmas

Merry ChristmasI love Christmas. I am Jewish and celebrate Chanukah. But there’s something really special about it. I can only describe it as the holiday spirit. Even in light of recent tragedies, there are still more good than bad. You’re the lights that shine bright making things right for tonight. It’s just a shame that it snowed on Christmas Eve and then turned into rain. Considering that the world ended, I guess that’s perfect. :P

To everyone who celebrates, I wish you a Merry Christmas. Have a great day and cherish it with the ones you love. Family and friends. Every day, we should enjoy. Savor the moments. Live for today. Smile and laugh. I know I did. Getting into the Santa spirit, here are some of my favorite Christmas songs:

Band Aid: “Do They Know It’s Christmas”

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band: “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”

Mariah Carey: “All I Want For Christmas Is You”

WHAM: “Last Christmas I Gave You My Heart”

Iron Maiden: “Another Rock ‘N Roll Christmas”

U2: “It’s Christmas”

Beastie Boys Appreciation

I am a huge Beastie Boys fan for like ever. They are rap in NYC as much as anyone. Originators. Innovators. Creators. This trio was electric and redefined the hip hop scene along with Run DMC and Grand Master Flash.

It still pains me that MCA is no longer with us, succumbing to cancer. Predictably following the Beastie’s Rock ‘N Roll Hall Of Fame induction, radio started giving the Beastie Boys more love. They so deserve it for the remarkable three decades they’ve been together and made us scream their lyrics whether at parties, in the car or with friends.

I can’t say enough about their impact. Three Jewish guys from NYC who made good after a failed rock try who made it big by changing their style to become one of the all-time greatest rap groups. Whenever I hear one of their songs like today in the car with incomparable “Fight For Your Right To Party,” I immediately turn up the volume and blast it. They are New York as much as anyone. And legends to boot who paved the way for L.L. Cool J, who paid tribute to them for sending his demo tape to make him big by inducting them following an old feud when he critiqued them for how they acted in public.

There are way too many hits to pull when it comes to the Beasties. They will always be beloved in this town and played over loudspeakers, ipods and god knows what else. To the Beastie Boys. May MCA be smiling down at your memorable sound that forever changed our lives. :D

Oldschool Flavor: Grandmaster Flash

Grandmaster Flash is one of the true innovators of the rap/hip hop culture.

Grandmaster Flash is one of the true innovators of the rap/hip hop culture.

Just chilling here in the abyss known as the Shaolin NYC representing, I was feeling all oldschool cause it’s so cool and all that stuff. Well, I did blast some classic Rob Base late last night as too. But who don’t love that shit?

This time, it’s another blast from the past in the legendary Grandmaster Flash, who was inducted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame along with the Furious Five 2-3 years ago as the first ever hip hop/rap act. We’re talking one of the original innovators who paved the way for so many. The man is like the greatest DJ ever with his own unique style that still blows the roof off clubs. Here, we’ll see the huge hit “White Lines,” spreading a powerful message about cocaine and the dangerous risks if you get hooked. Just listen to each line and you’ll get it LOUD and CLEAR. We’re also linking up him talking about his own personal battle before he decided to give it up:

The original studio cut is pretty freaking good. Still sounds fresh.

Live version. Listen to the spinning and the freaking energy! What a vibe!!!!!

Video(s) of Day: Oasis Live at Wembley Stadium

Well, I wasn’t really sure what I was going to feature today but there on my YouTube page suggested a great live version of one of my favorite Oasis songs, “Wonderwall.”

While it’s true I’ve featured the awesome rocking British group before, they just have such a great rock n’ roll sound. So distinct is Liam Gallagher’s voice along with the musical instruments of electric guitars blaring solos with the perfect drums and piano blending for awe inspiring stuff.

You just can’t go wrong with them. No wonder I’m hoping to score tickets for an MSG show in mid-December. What a night that would be. I should say will cause I’d be willing to bet the ranch I’m there for it. Anytime you give me a good concert to go to, I’m game!

I’ll even take it over tonight’s Rangers vs Devils game we’re headed to later in our customary 411 seats. And believe me. Rangers-Devils is as good as it gets with hockey. I love my Blueshirts. So, hopefully they’ll make it five-for-five in 2008-09 against an improved New Jersey team hell bent on seeking revenge for last year’s first round ouster.

Unless it’s the Rangers playing for the Cup in a Game Seven scenario, most of the time I’m going to take the concert. There’s just something special about seeing an artist/band live. It’s got a whole different feel. And the best aspect is usually they don’t let their fans down like sports teams can breaking your heart. Just ask a Mets or Jets fan.

So, Oasis it is today on tap. Here’s a few which I hope to catch in a couple of months in what will be winter. Uh. Wow.

Oasis: “Wonderwall“-Live at Wembley

this is a truly great rendition where everything sounds tip top with Liam’s outstanding pipes even being helped out by the crowd during the familiar chorus. My favorite aspect is the last minute with the electric amping it up and the piano solo for the dramatic conclusion.

Oasis: “Supersonic“-Live at Wembley

I like this song as it’s very sweet sounding. But really the best part of this live version is the amazing venue at Wembley with a packed house rocking and rolling. God. There are some great shots giving you some perspective of what it’d be like to be there. It’s kinda inspiring. I also love the background color coordination. That’s an underrated aspect of live performances. Most of Weezer’s was a cool kind of blue with some red and green mixed in. You can’t get that in some studio cut. Part of the concert going experience.

Oasis: “Roll With It“-Live at Wembley

this has always been an underrated song which has grown on me recently. This one’s all about the banter between Liam and older brother Noel before they start it up referencing a British gal in the audience:

Noel: What the f*** are you doing all the way down there? Hey listen! Now if she starts getting out of line, give her a – smack.”

Liam: Better pass her over very nicely. Otherwise, you stare at the -

Noel: This one’s for all the posh birds down the front then. No! Not you. Not you, You’re not posh, you only act posh.

Noel: I bet you wish you weren’t down there now, do ya?!?!?!?!?!”

The end is classic too where Liam basically gets a cutie to take her shirt off exposing her breasts. This must’ve been some show to be at! :-) The dialogue is comical.

Oasis: “Morning Glory“-Live at Wembley

this sounds freaking phenomenal. Everything is tremendous from the Liam’s voice to the drumming, piano and moaning guitar which gives this such a cool sound. It’s just an absolute winner. Great up close shots too of the band performing.

Oasis: “Champagne Supernova“-Live at Wembley

This is their best song because it’s so utterly complete and trippy. Nice to see they worked in some cool effects much like the video. The lyrics are to die for and with such emotion behind them. I can tell. Everything is pure energy which is how it should be with a rock band. There’s something about the ending with the guitar almost echoing like seagulls which gives that extra burst. It don’t get much better.

Oasis: “Don’t Look Back In Anger“-Live at Wembley

it’s all about the beginning dedication. Haha.

Video of Day: Oasis

On another cool night here in NYC as USC predictably blows the doors off another overrated Big 10 BCS pretender Ohio State (it’s 35-3), I felt like one of my favorite Oasis songs all day. I like Oasis. They’re a cool British band with that funky sound which draws ya to them.

They have a few songs I like including “Wonderwall,” “Don’t Look Back In Anger,” and “Morning Glory.” Tonight, I felt like taking a look at perhaps their best song, “Champagne Supernova.” You watch this video listening to the words becoming mesmerized by it. There’s the trippy background which I wouldn’t mind being lost in along with those cool wateresque special effects. And what’s not to love about that?

There’s the stylish clothes along with cool lighting while they play where I wish I could sometimes go because it’d be so much better. So much more alive than the bland alternative. We all long for it which is why music acts as our outlet. A place where we can get away from all the utter bullshit out there. And believe me. There’s a lot of it.

This song gives me that feeling that not everything’s quite as bad as it might seem. There are people worse off who are really struggling compared to myself. Though at times I feel defeated. Maybe that’s why I write. Cause it gives me that independent freedom away from everything.

So, take a look at this video and listen to the wonderful words and get lost in it taking you to a better place. Cause really, we all can use that.

Oasis: “Champagne Supernova

listen to the squeaking of the guitar as they come near its epic conclusion. a perfect blend of instruments along with lead singer Liam Gallagher’s words, “We were getting high.” enjoy it because it’s got that great sound and makes for the perfect ending to a great rock n’ roll song. That’s how they’re all supposed to be.

How many special people change?
How many lives are living strange?
Where were you while we were getting high?
Slowly walking down the hall
Faster than a cannonball
Where were you while we were getting high?

Someday you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova in the sky
Someday you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova
A champagne supernova in the sky

Great lyrics. :-)
