The Green Bay Packers are stuck in the midst of a bad breakup. Brett Favre is acting like the crazy girlfriend who just will not go away. He said it was over. The Packers were relieved and moved on to Aaron Rodgers, but Favre decided he was not done yet and threatened to come back to the preseason party since he was still under contract.
Favre’s return would have split the party along weird lines and would probably ruin Rodgers career (how do you bounce back from half the team shaking their head at you as you try to replace a legend…and he is standing right there?). The news came as a sort-of shock to the NFL. Everybody knows Favre does not know when to stop. Look at half his picks-passes forced into double or triple coverage. The guy just will not give up.
The Packers have tried everything, including paying him off. The man is insane. He turned down $20 million not to play. Now they are trying to pass him to somebody else. The problem is that Favre wants to play for a contender, but the Packers do not want to face him on their road to the playoffs.
Few teams that are playoff contenders do not have a quarterback they are happy with. Teams like the New England Patriots have Tom Brady. The rising Jaguars are selling tickets and hopes just fine with David Garrard. The list goes on and on. Eli Manning has not had his two-steps backwards game yet, so Giant fans are fine buying tickets with the Super Bowl MVP as the starter.
The obvious candidates are all in the Packers division, the Bears and the Vikings. The Packers want to abide by the rule that you never, ever trade within the division. What comes out of this is the possibility of the Packers convincing Brett Favre to accept a ticket to play with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the New York Jets.
The Jets are the more likely of the two. They have done a stellar job at upgrading the defense with Kris Jenkins and Calvin Pace and desperately need some help on offense. Kellen Clemens is not ready yet to take over yet as evident from last season’s performance and Chad Pennington’s arm has only gotten weaker with injury.
The Jets could try and sell the veteran on a great defense, a brand new line guaranteeing his safety, and the color green remaining in his jersey. New York fans would be ecstatic if the grizzled veteran came to the East Coast. Jets tickets would instantly double in demand.
The Packers mess could help the Jets avoid the predicted spot in the AFC East cellar and even give them a potential playoff spot. They would instantly have the second best quarterback in the division to go with a much-improved D.
