Lady Lions no match for Holy Child

PARK SLOPE, BK- It was a tough day for first-year coach Morgan Sevigny’s Lady Lions. Without top scorer Keyanka Bailey, her Varsity Basketball team was no match for visiting power Holy Child, who got 24 points from their Davidson bound star in a 63-14 win over the hosts at the Berkeley Carroll Athletic Center in Brooklyn.
They fell behind early against a quality opponent who used their height advantage inside and experience to break it open outscoring Berkeley Carroll 15 zip in the first quarter with their senior leader netting half her game high total.
Despite being blanked, the Lady Lions played an inspired second quarter scoring eight of their 14 on a pair of treys including a bank shot from starting guard Tess Salvatore. However, they still trailed by 23 at the half allowing Sevigny the opportunity to empty her bench.
In the second half, second-year player Gilda Gross scored all four of her points with lone senior captain Ashley Privett netting the other two as their opponent continued to build their lead.
Holy Cross also got 15 from another starter while one of their senior guards was continuing to be treated after taking a hard fall in the first quarter. She landed awkwardly on her left ankle and had it iced and heavily wrapped at halftime. Hopefully, the prognosis for the visitors from Westchester who improved to 8-2 won’t be too damaging.
Though the end result was eerily similar to a 57-12 defeat a couple of weeks prior against league foe Staten Island Academy, Sevigny and her assistant were pleased with the effort.
They’ll look to bounce back later today when they pay a visit along with the Boys Varsity to Trevor Day School on the Upper East side. The girls tip off at 4:30 while Coach Mike Kubera’s Lions follow suit at 6 tonight.
His club returns from a week off due to midterms aiming for their second straight following a 16-point home win over Brooklyn Friends. They’ll face a team that’s struggled with just two wins entering play with a 10-game losing streak.
None of that should matter with the school playing host against senior duo Giancarlo Hirsch, Phil Seay and Co. They’ll be looking to build momentum in preparation for a home showdown Friday versus defending ACIS champion Dwight.
Paller’s JV On Roll: While the two Varsity teams take center stage early on this week, Coach Walter Paller’s JV Boys have played well lately reeling off three consecutive wins over Martin Luther, Staten Island Academy and Brooklyn Friends to up their record to 4-6.
Though their most recent victory came over Friends, the most satisfying had to be a 52-51 nailbiter over SIA at Lincoln Place. Despite blowing a fourth quarter lead, Paller’s club showed good fortitude coming back to nip their Staten Island league opponent thanks to guard Jesse Chalfin’s late bucket.
He finished with 15 leading a balanced attack that included 14 from long range shooter Adam Kochman along with a career day from Joe Rosario, who contributed 10 points, six boards and three blocks.
Never easily satisfied, Paller at least had a grin when discussing his team’s improvement. That should get tested when they battle Dwight’s JV at the gym over in Lincoln Place Friday afternoon.
