More HB

December 13, 2008 in Dumb and Dumber Clown Mgt 101, MLB, More HB, NY Mets, NY Rangers, NY Yankees

-So it turns out Phils NLCS and World Series MVP Cole Hamels called the Mets chokers in a Daily News piece Friday following their major bullpen overhaul in an attempt to challenge the defending champs.

I’m not really certain what to make of it. Of course, the always classy David Wright took the high road basically concluding that Hamels could say whatever he wants based on how last year concluded.

But at some point, don’t you think a Met needs to fire back? Maybe it’s time. It’s only second week of December and already I can’t wait to see what these games will be like next Spring.

-The Yanks are about to land A.J. Burnett who they targeted from the beginning along with prize Cash Cow Sabathia. It looks like they’ll be getting the former Jay starter for five years at 82 million. That averages out to some 16.5-per-year which makes him way overpaid for a guy who’s never really been consistent despite his awesome talent which includes a near 100 MPH heater and nasty curve.

Oh btw…he had the Yankees’ number in 2008 and also pitched well against Boston but didn’t fare as well versus everyone else. So, what does that mean?

And why would the Yanks commit so many years at that price to a guy who could become DL prone like former 2003 Florida WS teammate FA failure Carl “DL” Pavano?

You really have to shake your head and wonder what the heck the thought process was. Was there even one?

-Meanwhile, the same team who can overpay for a guy who’s never done much is holding firm on a take or leave it 10 million offer to Andy Pettite. Now it might be true that the former southpaw Yankee hero might not have much left in the tank but for them to be so stubborn over a few million seems senseless. Especially when they continue to act as if there’s zero bad economy and are trying to win at all co$ts.

Sometimes, I’ll never fully comprehend the Yankees. No wonder I’m so down on them.

-MIA. The Ranger defense took the night off in Newark last night in a 8-5 loss to the Devils. Apparently, they felt it would be better to let Henrik Lundqvist fend for himself. That’s been the case most of the season despite their record which is tainted thanks to the goalie’s shootout record.

Let’s see how long it takes for Dumb and Dumber tandem Glen Sather and Tom Renney to realize their follies by continuing to trot out Dmitri Kalinin, Michal Rozsival and overpaid stiff Wade Redden.

I never thought it’d come to this but does any other Ranger fan miss Marek Malik?

-It’s 12/13 and Stephon Marbury still hasn’t been officially bought out by the Team Dumb and Dumber. This could only happen under the idiotic leadership of Clown Mgt 101 Founder Jim Dolan.

An inspiring song

December 13, 2008 in Concerts/Music

I wasn’t really sure where to post or what to entitle this but felt obligated to include it because it’s so genuine. It’s written and performed quite well by a friend I have on Xanga by the name of Jennifer.

She’s a very talented musician along with her younger sister Sarina. They’ve both continued to battle through some stuff in their lives along with their Mom. Of course, the unique talent they each possess and strength they have makes it easy to root for them to get better and have ultimate life success.

It’s rare that I ever do a music feature on someone most may have never heard but sometimes, the best music you hear can come from someone you never even knew before. Underground stuff like theirs which is very genuine along with close buddy PJ, who in my book could release a rap album is what makes it so easy to appreciate.

In any event, the background to Jen’s song called, “To Stay In Love (remix)” is about the love of her life Brittany. They share an incredible bond and definitely belong together.

Jen also had a song last week played on an LA radio station. It might’ve been the original. Both have different kinda sounds and it’s worth noting that there’s no singing involved. It’s just pure music with wonderful blends of the keyboard, piano, etc. coming directly from the heart.

I want people to take a listen because it’s so well done. See for yourself:

To Stay In Love (remix)

For anyone that listens, thanks and please give her some positive feedback. She deserves it!

Hirsch the hero in Lions’ win over Packer

December 13, 2008 in Berkeley Carroll

PARK SLOPE, BK- It was all on the line. With his team trailing by a point following two free throws by Packer’s leading scorer, none of that mattered to Giancarlo Hirsch.

Given an open look from behind the key, the poised Berkeley Carroll senior floor leader didn’t hesitate nailing the winning trey with 10 seconds to spare lifting the host Lions over their league rival 56-54 at the BC Athletic Center in Park Slope before a nice crowd Friday.

“That was amazing. … That was the most fun game I’ve ever played,” Hirsch boasted after scoring his team’s last five including a crucial offensive tip home defying gravity on his way to finishing with a game high 28 to bounce back from an off game the day before in a loss to Riverdale.

Last game of the playoffs (2007 ACIS Qtrs), a kid banged a shot and beat us in the same way. So it feels good to do it back to them.

It wasn’t surprising that a game between the ACIS rivals went down to the wire considering that Packer had a few starters back including their guard who paced them with 15 including the two freebies after drawing enough contact to get a call. Something which as Hirsch alluded to wasn’t too easy for either side in a seesaw action packed affair which even saw the senior get teed up in the first half after being a little peturbed.

But as he also pointed out, they didn’t let it get to them persevering to earn their fourth win of the season and third at the BC gym. Overall, they improved to 4-3.

Early on, the Lions got a spark from shooting guard Cole Kitchen, who caught fire nailing three in a row from downtown on the left wing giving them an early eight-point lead.

“I started out shooting the three and I don’t know. I was just on fire. Towards the end of the game, I got a little excited there,” he explained of some later misses when it tightened up.

Packer never panicked despite falling behind chipping away to keep it close the rest of the half. When their shooting guard nailed an uncontested three before the halftime buzzer, they trailed by only three.

The teams exchanged leads in a competitive third quarter with the Packer leading shooter remaining on fire hitting for three more. But the Lions were able to stay afloat thanks to some savvy play from Hirsch and key third guard Joe Longo, who scored all four of his points at the line to offset a foul plagued day for senior Phil Seay. He still chipped in with 10 playing with three fouls due to a botched call before fouling out when he hacked the Packer point guard with BC leading by just one.

After he made both, Lions’ coach Mike Kubera opted to let his team play it out not allowing Packer to setup their defense. It turned out to be a wise decision when Hirsch came off a screen and hit nothing but net from the outside forcing Packer to burn their last timeout.

BC defended the initial play well nearly forcing a turnover but with three seconds left, Packer got one last chance with a tough three by the point guard from the left corner going off the rim as the buzzer sounded while the rest of Hirsch’s teammates mobbed him.

“He’s our leader,” praised Kitchen.

“On and off the court. He’s a big supporter of us. At the end, he was able to keep it under control.”

Notes: BC returns to the court Monday facing off against league power Friends Seminary with the JV playing first. Tip times are 4 and 5:30 at the BC gym.

JV Falls To Packer: They kept it close for a half but the BC JV Boys came undone in the final 16 minutes falling 48-24 to Packer.

Shooting guard Adam Kochman’s 15 including an end of the half three-point bank shot weren’t enough for Walter Paller’s young squad who dropped their second straight and first in league play.

Varsity Girls Post Road Win: The BC Girls Varsity netted a 54-41 road win over Kew Forest earning their second consecutive win improving to 2-3 on the season.

Due to next Wednesday’s road tilt at Marymount being canceled, they get the rest of December off before returning to action at United Nations on January 6.

Random Thoughts: New York ballclubs clean up in Vegas

December 11, 2008 in MLB, NY Mets, NY Yankees, Random Thoughts

Not surprisingly, the two New York baseball teams came out the biggest winners at the Baseball Winter Meetings in Las Vegas with the Mets landing free agent closer and single season 62 save record holder K-Rod and wisely dealing for former Seattle closer J.J. Putz while the Yankees chased, chased and chased bending over backwards to land the biggest fish Cash Cow Sabathia severely overpaying by 60 million until the former 2007 AL Cy Young winner finally was convinced thanks to an out clause after the third year if he doesn’t like it here.

Would you go to all that trouble to land one of the game’s top starters when it was clear as day he didn’t want any part of New York hoping against hope that one of his hometown California NL teams the Dodgers or Giants would come calling keeping him in a Senior Circuit he flat out dominated tossing seven complete games in carrying the Brewers to their first October baseball in 26 years?

I’d have gone for Option B and looked into acquiring San Diego ace Jake Peavy, who might be better than Johan Santana even though Daily News columnist narcissist Mike Lupica and other Mets propaganda would have you believe otherwise. As if the Venezuelan was the second coming of Christ because he took the ball once on short rest and dominated giving the Amazin’s a chance on the final Sunday before the roof caved in causing Omar Minaya to wake up from the doldrums and realize his pigpen wasn’t championship caliber. I wonder what could’ve tipped him off? Was it the Phillies’ 1-2 punch of Ryan Madson to the perfect Brad Lidge resulting in the city of Philadelphia’s first world championship in 25 years?

Funny but as down as I am on the Yankees flexing their mu$cles for Sabathia, I could’ve sworn he finished five more games in three months than Santana did in his first NL season. In fact, the 27 year-old new Yankee ace’s 10 CGs are one better than the 29 year-old Mets ace for his entire MLB career.

This doesn’t mean Sabathia’s better. In fact, Santana has the more proven track record if you go year by year comparing their careers with Sabathia’s meteoric rise coming the past two seasons in which he won a combined 36 games with the Indians and Brewers taking home his first Cy and finishing in the top six despite half a season in the Senior Circuit. Santana finished third behind deserving NL recipient Tim Lincecum and Arizona’s Brandon Webb.

Speaking of Lincecum, it kind of makes you wonder why they didn’t extend an offer to Sabathia, who grew up pretty closeby and could’ve made a great 1-2 combo for the Giants, a team which has fielded some of the most pathetic squads recently having bought failed lefty Barry “Baked” Zito.

They already gave too many years to Edgar Renteria to fill a hole at short left by Omar Vizquel. You’re telling me they couldn’t go for a top tier pitcher who could’ve turned them into a division contender. It doesn’t take much to win the NL West. Just ask the Dodgers and Manny Ramirez.

Maybe it’s true that the Giant offense isn’t scaring anyone. But in a pitcher’s park, had they stacked up Sabathia with Lincecum, overlooked Matt Cain and young arm Jonathan Sanchez, suddenly they’d have a staff in place to compete no matter what Zito gave them.

Here’s a novel idea. Just bring back Will Clark, Robby Thompson, Matt Williams and Kevin Mitchell to give the offense a boost. If only it were that simple.

One other thing on Santana. While Lupica’s right that he’s more reliable than Sabathia, just remember all the Yanks did was waste more of their own money to get the former Brewer. Both will be paid the same yearly salary making a cool 23 million to win 18-20 games.

Only one team traded away prospects. And until the Mets see October or add another championship, you can’t say much. Telling a blowhard like Lupica that before he bashes the team in the Bronx for doing what they do best.

Better yet. What’s a tougher league? The loaded AL featuring DH driven lineups or the watered down NL that includes garbage teams like the Nats, Padres, Pirates and Giants?

Hard to believe the Nats are offering the kitchen sink to Mark Teixeira with a standing offer also from Baltimore with Boston in serious pursuit of the first base switch hitting slugger who also packs some leather. You don’t think he’d sign with such a bottomfeeder? Will the Angels bring him back? It’d probably be in their best interest considering Vlad Guerrero ain’t getting any younger.

With the Yanks and Mets loading up and getting more state grants to fund their state of the art new stadiums, what bad economy?

Apparently, they haven’t gotten the message.

Riverdale strong second half dooms Lions

December 11, 2008 in Berkeley Carroll

PARK SLOPE, BK- They led by only eight at the half but it was all Riverdale afterwards as they dominated outscoring the host Berkeley Carroll Lions by 17 en route to a 60-35 win in a Varsity Boys tilt at the BC Athletic Center in Park Slope Thursday.

Two players combined for 48 of 60 with their leading scoring guard netting a game high 30 while his bigger teammate did most of his damage following intermission getting 14 of 18 to help the visitors pull away from the smaller home club.

The senior guard tandem of Giancarlo Hirsch and Phil Seay got out of the gate slowly while Riverdale built an early 9-2 lead forcing coach Mike Kubera to burn an early timeout. His team settled down and cut it to three by the end of the quarter.

Berkeley Carroll couldn’t sustain the momentum as the guard play of Riverdale helped them build the lead back up to double digits thanks to an array of three-pointers along with some easier finishes near the basket.

Trailing by 12, the Lions got a nice burst when Seay nailed consecutive treys with running mate Hirsch getting involved to slice the deficit to two forcing the visitors to call for time. They responded by finishing the half strong upping their lead back to eight.

The Lions never got in sync during the crucial third quarter with the shots not falling from the perimeter while their bigger foes utilized all their weapons getting easier buckets doubling the cushion. It eventually forced Kubera to get some of his younger plays valuable experience with a more important ACIS league game versus Packer Friday.

Freshman Cole Kitchen provided a spark hitting a pair of trifectas and junior Sean Cunningham scored inside. However, on a day when Hirsch was held in single digits with eight while Seay finished with nine, it just wasn’t enough to offset how well Riverdale executed with their small guard getting into the lane at will setting up lay-ups.

Riverdale eventually extended their lead to 20 in the final quarter which allowed BC to rest their starters for tomorrow’s home league tilt.

The JV Boys game was hardly better with BC falling by 20 allowing Riverdale to sweep. Coach Walter Paller’s shorthanded squad fell behind 18-3 and never recovered. However, one freshman paced them with 12 hitting two triples both in the second half.

Video of Day: Weezer

December 11, 2008 in Video of Day

Today’s is a rare Weezer track entitled, “We Go Together” performed live a couple of years ago at what seems to be a small venue. Those can be really cool. Take Hammerstein Ballroom here in Manhattan! That rocks and I really enjoyed those GNR shows cause they were so close with not a bad seat in the house giving a more intimate setting.

A Nice Day

December 10, 2008 in Shaolin Freestyle/Poetry 101

I wasn’t sure what to call this but this seemed decent enough.

“A Nice Day”
by Derek Felix AKA D Flex

You sit there on that bench
Looking around at the sky
Taking it all in around you
Knowing it’s all worthwhile
So much out there as the sky turns blue
It’s no wonder your bright face suddenly smiles

Cause this is the kinda place you envisioned
One that can give you so much delight
Where you can stay out and not miss television
Because it’s your time and God given right
A moment to enjoy all that makes it oh so good
When things get tough today makes you feel better
Walking around you can smile and laugh as you should
And remember that deep down you’re a go getter
Someone who’s very driven and never gives in
That’s what this nice day reminds you of
Where anything’s possible and you feel you can win
Finally reaching that point of eternal love

If

December 7, 2008 in Shaolin Freestyle/Poetry 101

Inspired by someone and written in about 15 minutes.:-)

“If”
by Derek Felix AKA D Flex

If I could just see your face
Everything would be alright
If then I wouldn’t feel like a lost case
And suddenly things would finally be right

If I could just see your smile once more
Nothing else would even matter
If you flashed that grin it’d like knocking on heaven’s door
And I’d just feel the echos of my heart pitter patter

If I could just look once more into those beautiful eyes
Everything would really change
If then there wouldn’t be anymore lies only pleasant surprise
And I could finally turn the page

If I could just stand and hear your laugh
Time would feel like it was standing still
If you chuckled there’d be no more wrong path
And for once my spirit wouldn’t be killed

If I could just get my chance to talk to you
I know I could make you understand how I really feel
If then I’d say all the right words so you’d finally have a clue
And maybe we could do it over a nice fancy meal

If I could talk you into going out
I’d make you see what I always wanted
If you said yes there’d be no more doubt
And finally I’d never again feel haunted

Video(s) of Day: A-Ha

December 6, 2008 in Video of Day

Sometimes, you make fascinating discoveries by accident and really begin to appreciate things even more. Take the Norwegian 1980′s band A-Ha, who’s always been best known for the big hit and memorable black and white comic video for “Take On Me.”

Thing is as great a song as that is and as innovative as the video is as it’s still one of my faves, this band is so much more than that hit. Still, I found some really cool stuff on YouTube by accident and maybe I should link it up celebrating how underappreciated these guys really are.

See for yourselves what makes them so special:

I feel like both these songs disprove the whole one hit wonder 80′s philosophy which was very true for many bands back then when I was growing up. I wonder why these didn’t get more play here. Is it the whole European thing?

“You Are The One” was/is probably their most recognizable track after Take On Me. It’s got that very distinct sound. Almost has a Depeche Mode kinda vibe to it. Another band I can’t get enough of. No pun intended. :-D

This is a very different sounding song played and sang with more of a serious tone to it. Very deliberate as if there’s an important message being delivered to the audience. There are some very nice sounds to the music and the way it’s shot is quite interesting with lots of random shots in bright light. Solid finish.

And what would this special feature be without their bread and butter? Here are three different versions unique in their own way and spirit:

This was the original made in 1984 which isn’t as heard. It’s different sounding but very good.

The 1985 version which went big time and one of the most unique/cool videos. I don’t care how many great videos there have been since. Just think of what went into it at that time when videos were still fairly new and MTV was really about the Music and not cheesy second rate shows. Pure genius!

This is the video which inspired this entry. I found it by accident and just was amazed at how well performed it was. So different and in Times Square commemorating the Four Year Anniversary of 9/11. :-(

Wow. Amazing. Hope you all enjoyed this post as it was quite fun to do. :-)

Video(s) of Day: Bullet For My Valentine

December 5, 2008 in Video of Day

I gotta be honest. The first time Bullet For My Valentine opened for the new GNR at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC, I felt they were just way too loud but maybe also it was the venue which was small and this is a British heavy metal band who was just coming on the scene at the time.

Hard to believe that was over three years ago or was it? Ah. Nevermind. I saw three of the four Guns N’ Roses warmup shows before a full fledged European/North American tour which went well unlike the previous disaster where me and bro caught the final concert before the plug was pulled by the former label some six years ago.

Like seriously. The anniversary is today before Clear Channel derailed the rest of it following a successful MSG show where then guitarist Buckethead handed out Christmas toys to the audience and a jovial Axl dedicated some Krispy Kremes to NBC Late Night host Conan O’Brien.

That was a serious fun time. :-) Reflecting back, it’s still hard to fathom a guitarist named Buckethead donning a KFC bucket on his head with a mask similar to cool flick V For Vendetta. He was a damn good guitarist but did look a little out of place. Since he’s been replaced by the much more normal and down to earth Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal who is a fixture on 104.3 Friday Night Rocks with host Eddie Trunk.

It was Trunk’s show which became a turning point for the band where close Axl friend and rocker Sebastian Bach put out a call to his buddy and landed the lone original Gunner on the radio for an exclusive interview which revealed plenty and that there just might be hope afterall for the long awaited Chinese Democracy album that finally got released Nov.23 before Thanksgiving to positive reviews.

What this has to do with Bullet For My Valentine is that the second tour two years prior gave them good exposure where even one of their songs from The Poison album was recognizable on NHL ’06. Between all the screaming from lead singer/guitarist Matthew Tuck during the Hammerstein gigs, there were a few good songs which made an impression like “All These Things I Hate (Revolve Around Me),” “4 Words (To Choke Upon)” and personal favorite “Tears Don’t Fall.”

Ultimately, I liked the death punk metal sound enough to purchase the album getting a wtf reaction from my brother. I wouldn’t have it any other way since he’s 80′s sessed while I’m into everything making me wonder how I could be the older one. ;-)

I just really like their stuff. It’s got some serious edge to it a little like Metallica, who has also made a comeback with a their best work since the Black album. About time they decided to concentrate on putting out good music instead of the whole Napster debacle.

Anyway, Bullet has a very good sound if you like that hard rock sound featuring blaring guitars, solos and loud drums. Here are some of my faves:

Note: This is from their first ever thing. EP Bullet For My Valentine. It’s very good!

I really like the way they shot this. The black and white with rain coming down along with the hot chick work to give it that dramatic feel. Lots of emotion in the words if you listen carefully.

This is another song I really liked. It starts out very calm being played at an acoustic pace before intensifying. Again, notice the dark theme during the video with black and white shots of another incredibly hot chick. That’s this band in a nutshell.
