Strong fourth quarter propels Friends Seminary past Lions

PARK SLOPE, BK- For 24 minutes, ACIS league rivals Berkeley Carroll and Friends Seminary played to a near standoff with the visitors from midtown ahead by a point.
However, that clearly wasn’t the case in the deciding fourth quarter which saw Friends Seminary click on all cylinders outscoring Berkeley Carroll 25-12 en route to a 64-50 road win at the BC gym in Park Slope Monday.
Thanks to a balanced attack led by junior power forward Kliedman and long range bomber Ito who each scored 18, Friends turned a close game into a comfortable margin despite foul trouble for their starting point guard who was limited to six.
While Kliedman was a consistent factor inside, the x-factor was the perimeter shooting for Friends who got six uncontested treys for Ito who made the Lions pay dearly for not getting out in time.
Most of the damage came in the second half with him draining half in the fourth quarter where they began to pull away despite a couple of hoops from BC senior guard Giancarlo Hirsch, who was limited to just five second half points after scoring 10 of 15 early on.
Last Friday’s hero in their win over Packer got plenty of help from guards Phil Seay (14) and Joe Longo (8) as they built a nine-point lead in the second quarter forcing Friends Seminary to call for time.
Also contributing during the run was Cole Kitchen, who came in and nailed a triple from the right wing for his lone bucket.
But with the action fast and furious, the visitors were able to get back in it running off seven straight to slice the deficit to two forcing BC coach Mike Kubera to burn a timeout.
The Lions settled down taking a 30-27 lead into the locker room. The third saw each team struggle from the field with defense taking over. With Hirsch held in check, junior Sean Cunningham stepped up with a couple of timely hoops getting most of his seven to keep the home team afloat down 39-38 entering the final period.
Friends made the most of their opportunities to break the game open thanks to Ito’s hot shooting along with some help from another starter in double digits with 12 including a couple of wide open daggers forcing Kubera to use another timeout.
His team trailed by six but never got any closer as they were unable to get through a stingy Friends D which was led by Kliedman who defended Hirsch well making him earn his five after intermission.
The junior got just reward when he was setup by his foul plagued teammate for a three-point play putting it out of reach.
Notes: BC starter John Shaughnessy played a solid aggressive game on both ends netting three scoring his only basket on a nice putback. He also made one of two from the charity stripe in the final quarter to try to keep his team in it. … The Lions also sunk at least nine from downtown but it wasn’t enough as they fell to 1-1 in league play and 6-4 overall.
JV Falls in Overtime: In easily their best effort thus far, Walter Paller’s Boys JV blew a seven-point fourth quarter lead falling to Friends Seminary 51-48 in overtime.
Executing well in the halfcourt with quick passing to setup timely outside shooting, the younger Lions seemed poised to pickup their first league win and second on the season. However, a strong surge by their opponents forced the game into OT.
In it, they fell behind by six and couldn’t recover despite five of point guard Jesse Chapmin’s team best 16. They’ll try to regroup when they battle Martin Luther High tomorrow before the Varsity game at 5:30 in BK.
BC Girls Fall At Friends: In other action, the BC Varsity Lady Lions had a rough go of it at Friends Seminary falling by 23 under first-year coach Morgan Sevigny.
With just two wins and a younger squad featuring lone senior Ashley Privett along with returning starters Keyanka Bailey and Tess Salvatore, they’ll now get the rest of the Winter Break off before a 1/6 visit at United Nations before returning for only their second home game versus defending league champion Staten Island Academy 1/7.
